Numbers of the Somme
Mixed media on canvas
(Numbers of the Somme series)
258 x 131cm
My grandfather "Charlie Day" and Great grandfather "Henry Shipton" were the inspiration for this new body of work. It represents my thoughts on WW1's Battle of the Somme. Numbers within the painting are army numbers of soldiers missing in action and were taken randomly from records, other than that of my great grandfather Henry Shipton (also registered as missing in action on the Somme) and my grandfather “Charles H Day” who survived the Somme.
There are 13 paintings and 5 sculptures in total.
Eleven soldiers are featured in the tableau measuring 270cm x 143cm. Each soldier is portrayed by his army number.
Eleven smaller individual paintings commemorate the eleven soldiers portrayed in the main body of work.(again, recognized by their army number)
